“A bit about our History…

Redpost Equestrian was first established when we moved to Devon in 1992. Previously John and I (Louise) ran a Show Jumping and Livery yard in Surrey, catering for over 20 horses at a time. John rode professionally on the National Show Jumping circuit and had moved to Surrey from Dorset. John’s son Justin, then 19 years old, also Show Jumped and was based at our busy yard.

In 1989, whilst visiting friends in South Devon, we came across a small Feed Merchants called Torbay Hunter and Pony Feeds that just so happened to be for sale. We fell in love with the land it was on, the views over Dartmoor and the Area including the nearest town Totnes, 3 miles away. We bought it and by 1992 John, our son Ben (aged 2) and I had moved down to live on the property, naming it Lillisford Stud. Justin followed just a few months later and our third son Michael (Mikey) was born in 1994. We began building up the business (then known as Redpost Feeds) very slowly, starting with just Animal Feed and Bedding. When one of our regular customers asked one day for some jodhpurs I replied “I can try and get a pair, but I don’t think we will be selling riding wear and clothing!”. Little did I know what lay ahead! Eventually, under pressure from customers, we stocked a small range of jodhpurs and from then on our Clothing Room grew year on year and our then feed store was converted bit by bit into a carpeted, wood clad, display room built by John and friends.

In order for finances and time to be spent on the shop John decided to stop competing full time but continued to teach. Within a few years of moving down however Justin had become well known locally on the Show Jumping circuit and his yard (based at Lillisford Stud) grew ever bigger.

Between 1992 and 2002 Redpost Feeds became well known locally for stocking a wide and varied range of specialist Horse Feeds and Bedding and its Horse Wear, Tack and Clothing departments continued to grow. We also founded Redpost Show Jumping Club in 1994, a purpose built show ground at Lillisford Stud consisting of 3 large Grass Arenas. We run shows throughout the summer including BS Affiliated and Unaffiliated competitions as well as Riding Club and Charity Shows.

In 2003 we changed our name to Redpost Equestrian Ltd to reflect the fact that we also sold many other equestrian products, horse wear, riding clothing and casual clothing. Although we do cater for other animals, Equestrianism is and always will be our area of expertise and what we are most passionate about. In 2006 we were told we had won the BETA UK Feed Merchant of the Year award. The judging consisted of customer votes, an independent judge and a mystery shopper, so we were very proud to have been selected. After several years in which we reached the finals this was followed up by firstly one of our team, Jess Baker (was Papworth), winning BETA Retail Employee of the Year 2014 and then Redpost Equestrian winning BETA Retailer of the Year 2015.

As well as our product and brand range growing dramatically since we first opened we have also seen our work force grow. When we first opened it was just John and I (and Ben in his push chair). Now we employ over 12 dedicated and knowledgeable members of staff without whom we would not be where we are today. They are all keen horse and animal owners so most of the time they have firsthand experience when offering advice. Although we have grown we still strive to maintain that feeling of personal customer service that is so important to us.

Where we are now....

Ben and his wife Claire both work within the business and are based here at Lillisford Stud with their horses. Ben rode a small amount whilst he grew up, but at 18 years old he began competing and now combines running the business, heading up the internet and marketing side, with riding and competing. Ben’s wife Claire also competes show jumping and works in the shop. Claire has a keen eye for fashion and new products and so works with me to ensure Redpost is always stocking top quality products. Ben has worked towards introducing more up to date technology. In December 2011 he helped bring to life our first online ecommerce venture which proved to us that we have the products that people want and that an online shop window worked very well. It was in 2012 that it became clear that to keep up with demand and to give an even better service we were going to need a bigger and better website that was linked to our shop’s stock management system. With the help of Citrus Lime this became reality. The website’s stock availability feature is linked with the shop, so this means products that are in stock should always be ready for immediate dispatch. Working with Citrus Lime we launched a new site in 2016 which is now fully responsive so you can browse easily no matter the device.

Justin now runs his own 26 horse Show Jumping and Livery yard just 500 yards down the road. He runs the yard with his wife Beth and son Oliver (born in 2003) and all 3 compete Show Jumping. Having represented Great Britain and competed several times abroad Justin has a good up and coming string of horses and always welcomes the chance to work with new owners and teach new pupils.

Mikey is based at Lillisford Stud and runs his own competition and training yard with his girlfriend Harriet. Both Mikey & Harriet spent time working and training with Olympic Showjumper Shane Breen. They have put this experience to good use now taking training & competition liveries, breaking of young horses and offering 1 to 1 and group tuition.

We hope you have enjoyed our story and not got too bored.

The Tuff family’s passion is still horses! So we have developed a life style that enables all of us to work, live and show jump together. It is a real family business.....”
